During the brief development of Turok 2, the team at Propaganda Games conceptualized and in some cases fully modelled intended assets for the ill-fated sequel.
In-engine prototypes[]
Enemies and wildlife[]
Tyrannosaurus rex[]
The Tyrannosaurus rex received a dramatic overhaul for Turok 2. With the game taking place in a badlands environment, the animal was given a much more rugged series of scales and osteoderms. Its skin color would shift from Scarface's deep bronze-brown to a light tan. Over the game's development, this specific T. rex's snout would be redesigned to be more snubbish, although it would maintain the lean, muscular, thick frame of 2008's Turok.
The desert variant would be the only T. rex developed for in a large capacity, showing up in concept art, renders, animation reels, and an untitled Turok 2 trailer that would be leaked sometime in 2012.
The desert variant of the T. rex was the first seen, but not the only one conceptualized. Concept art of multiple T. rexes in a jungle environment would be revealed through a leak in 2013, with some showing the dinosaur possessing a sail very much akin to the notorious Spinosaurus, while others would be much more traditional in aesthetic. Mood pieces for Turok 2 showed the Tyrannosaurus in jungles, deserts, and swampy marshes.
Unlike the Utahraptor, which possessed distinct jungle, desert, and conceptual "swamp" variants, the T. rex only had a desert variant that was fully realized. A potential jungle variant's existence meshes with the aforementioned concept art.
Utahraptor[]
Much akin to Turok 2's Tyrannosaurus rex, the Utahraptor was intended to be visually overhauled for Turok 2. Many ideas for the Utahraptor were concepted for, the furthest along being a desert variant of the animal, also known as the "Sand Raptor", fitting with Turok 2's focus on a desert-badland environment. This creature possessed a rough, worn aesthetic, with a scaled underbelly, rocky osteoderms, and a tan-sand color, being most in line with Turok's original portrayal of Utahraptors. This variant would be featured in screenshots of the game's vertical slice.
Another variant dubbed the "Feathered Raptor" featured a large plume of colorful feathers, fitting more in line with scientific portrayals of the creature. While the first concept variant possessed a duller color, the final model of the animal featured a vibrant nearly iridescent green shade.
The last variant was a conceptual variant known as the "Swamp Raptor". Featuring dark, oily skin, a fish-like set of fins and a crocodilian eye, with a slimmed pupil, only concept art exists of this creature.
Weapons[]
Assault rifle[]
Following in Turok's footsteps, Turok 2 was slated to feature an assault rifle. Many concepts would be explored, including a foldable stock, with various sight designs. While many concepts would wind up with a traditional aesthetic for the assault rifle, certain variants would lean into the aesthetic of the Heckler & Koch XM8. Like Turok before it, the idea of a bayonet would be sketched out, however the final weapon model would lack one, instead featuring a grenade launcher underbarrel. This weapon could be briefly seen in an animation demo reel done by former Turok animators.
Arrow types[]
- "Taking the flare mechanic and attaching it to the weapon that most players gravitated towards - the bow and arrow - in the vertical slice made all the difference. Not only was the flare arrow now always at hand, and therefore more likely to be used when running focus tests, but it was much easier to aim than the original shotgun flare."
- —Tim Lewinson
First spoken of by Tim Lewinson on Twitter and NeoGAF, the Perforator was intended to sport four types of arrows for Turok 2. [1] [2] These included:
- Regular arrows - returning basic arrow from the original Turok.
- Tracking arrows - intended for hunting scenarios, allowing the player to track a target over long distances with a successful hit.
- Electric arrows - intended for stunning dinosaurs and other creatures.
- Flare arrows - intended to act similarly to Turok's Enforcer's flare secondary, used for luring.
As per Lewinson's comments, the flare arrow made it as far as the vertical slice of Turok 2, and was described as easier to use than the Enforcer's flare.
Balefire[]
- "Best new #Turok2 weapon called #Balefire. Dualsupport - charged cannon or timed explosive a la Predator ending #BOOM"
- —Tim Lewinson
Also briefly referenced by Tim Lewinson on Twitter and NeoGAF, the Balefire was an intended new weapon for Turok 2. Described as a charged cannon, and a timed explosive, the weapon was intended to be absolutely destructive to anything it touched; being likened to the weapon detonated by the titular antagonist during the ending of the 1987 film Predator. While not directly named in its concept art, art matching this weapon's description was made for Turok 2.[2]
Jak[]
The Jak was a new weapon conceptualized for Turok 2. The weapon was intended to be a successor to the Cerebral Possessor of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, with the weapon's round being capable of controlling the planet's native dinosaurs. Concept art for the Jak labels a two-step process with the weapon, the first being fluid extraction, the second a state of being ready to use, and like the assault rifle, it featured a few pieces of concept art with varying designs.
This weapon was one of the few major new elements present in Turok 2, being present in a screenshot from a presumed vertical slice, and also showing up in the untitled Turok 2 trailer, which shows Joseph Turok wielding a weapon that matched its profile and concept art.
Concept-only content[]
Enemies and wildlife[]
Giant eel[]
Explorative concept art for Turok 2 showcased Joseph Turok fighting a giant eel.
Mendel-Gruman faction[]
The Mendel-Gruman faction from Turok was slated to return in Turok 2, featuring a slew of redesigns and new units. Known new units include the Mendel-Gruman Enforcer, Hunter, Radiciation Unit, with the Mendel-Gruman Grunt returning from Turok, with a redesign.
The Enforcer concept looked much akin to the Elite of Turok, and it would be the testbed for many potential pitched palettes for Mendel-Gruman units; these include an orange "hunter" palette, a beige "desert" palette, a deep green "jungle" palette, and a navy blue-gray "space" palette. The MG Hunter looked like an up-armored version of the Enforcer, featuring a larger assault rifle and larger, taller armor, with pipes running from the unit's thick wrist armor, into a backpack they wore. Additional concepts for the Hunter saw the unit having multiple different helmets and distinct differences in armor. The Radification Unit was a giant mech featuring broad armor plating, tri-fingered hands, and an appropriately scaled cannon, wielded in their left hand.
Many new Mendel-Gruman units featured a new and prominent star decal on their shoulder armor.
The aforementioned Grunt redesign would be quite drastic, giving the originally diminutive unit a heavier set of armor and a large rifle to wield. The soldier's shin armor and codpiece would be noticeable larger, with the helmet now possessing a pipe which ran down the Grunt's armor. They possessed a sidearm of unknown make, much like their 2008 variant.
Ork[]
One concept piece of a large, ork-like character wielding an enormous axe was created for Turok 2. Not much is known past this.
Saber-toothed cat[]
Marking its first appearance since Turok: Evolution, the saber-toothed cat was intended to return in Turok 2, with a piece of concept art showcasing the large feline attacking Mendel-Gruman forces.
Savage People[]
An intended new faction for Turok 2. The Savage People were a zombie-like faction made up of the remnants of the Mendel-Gruman faction, which had fallen into disarray during the sequel's narrative. Many of the characters in this faction sported armor made up of the bones of deceased animals from the planet, with tribalistic, primitive weaponry. The Radification Unit of the Mendel-Gruman faction had an analogous Savage version through the Berserker, a heavy unit for the Savage People.
Weapons[]
ORO P23 combat knife[]
The P23 combat knife was intended to return in early concepts for Turok 2. In May of 2015, Tim Lewinson would provide some details on the evolving concepts for the weapon. In this post, he stated the P23 was intended to return with a redesign. At some point in Turok 2's story, this knife would be lost, acting as a deconstruction of the player's power, and it would have to be replaced by a second primal variant, formed from the remains of a dead predator the player would kill. This blade, refined over the game, would eventually be formed into a third variant, reflecting the overall journey the player underwent throughout Turok 2. [3]
It is ultimately unknown of any of these potential gameplay elements and loops would make their way into Turok 2's vertical slice.
