- "Jesus, I think that was a... Dilophosaurus..."
- —Slade, upon killing one.[1]
Dilophosaurus is a large carnivorous theropod that makes its first appearance in Turok. This species was encountered multiple times by both Whiskey Company and the Mendel-Gruman Corporation over the events of the game, with the larger theropod repeatedly preying on both side's soldiers.
Appearance[]
Turok's variant of the Dilophosaurus is aesthetically similar to its real-life counterpart, with its imposing size and its head crests being present. It is about eight feet tall and over fifteen feet long. Its skin is a mix of beige with a pink coloration around the arms, feet, and stomach of the dinosaur. They are quite lanky in appearance, and they do not appear to be very muscular for their size.
Gameplay[]
In gameplay this dinosaur is a massive threat in comparison to Utahraptors or Mini-Raptors, acting as a mini-boss. It, like other large carnivores, is able to outpace Joseph Turok.
Similar to Utahraptors, the Dilophosaurus will attempt to ram the player with its head, rushing forward quickly and knocking them down. It will also sporadically attempt to whip the player with its tail. Unlike the Tyrannosaurus rex or Giganotosaurus, the Dilophosaurus' tail whip is intentional, and it will pivot fully in an attempt to hit the player. If they are hit and are weak enough, it is likely the dinosaur will follow up and finish them off with an instant kill animation.
These dinosaurs are very durable, and they are able to take a grenade or a Blackfly explosion without dying in one shot. They will instead fall over, giving the player a chance to kill them with the knife.
This dinosaur can also be distracted by means of a flare, giving the player a chance to either run or quickly shoot it with their weapon of choice.
History[]
Turok[]
Joseph Turok's first run-in with a Dilophosaurus would occur in Death Valley, although the giant dinosaur would be deceased, having been presumably hunted down and slaughtered by the valley's Giganotosaurus. Upon escaping the caves underneath the valley, he would run into another Dilophosaurus as it hunted and killed a Utahraptor, before Slade intervened.
In the days following this, Turok would come across another, laying waste to Mendel-Gruman soldiers on his way to find Cowboy. He would not come across any others for some time, until he and Slade escaped the planet's cave system. On their way to Logan and the other survivors, the duo would find two dilophosaurs, which were occupied in slaughtering Mendel-Gruman personnel.
Joseph's next encounter would be during the chaotic volcanic eruption in the region, with a group of approximately five dilophosaurs being seen at the base of the mountain near the MG complex Whiskey was moving to, seemingly preying on the panicking Parasaurolophus. Once the remnants of Whiskey had made their way inside, accomplished their goal, and initiated an escape, a lone Dilophosaurus would find its way to them, before being dispatched.
Sometime afterwards, Delta Team would encounter a lone Dilophosaurus shortly after transmitting access codes for another Mendel-Gruman facility to Beta Team. Later, while awaiting extraction at a rendezvous point nearby, four more dilophosaurs would arrive and attack both Whiskey Company and Mendel-Gruman forces fighting for control of the region.
As Alpha Team advanced into Mother Superior in an effort to aid Gamma Team, they encountered a pair of dilophosaurs in a dinosaur graveyard. Dilophosaurs would not be encountered by Beta Team.

Production notes[]
- "The mammoth mauler dinosaurs are a midway point between the raptors and the larger T-Rexes. Maulers move with furious, powerful motions, flinging men aside with their powerful jaws."
- —Game Informer: August, 2006, page 54[2]
Early preliminary promotional material for Turok, including the August 2006 issue of Game Informer make references to a large animal called the "mauler", described as a halfway point between a raptor and a Tyrannosaurus in scale. It's likely this is an informal, early name for the Dilophosaurus, as the size of the animal matches, as does the description of its attack, which the Dilophosaurus retained in Turok's finished builds.
Concept art had the Dilophosaurus looking much more emaciated and nearly zombie-like in aesthetic, featuring dulled, glazed-over eyes; tighter skin; and jagged, disorganized rows of teeth. Likewise, an early character model lacked the crests on its head. Instead, they were replaced by a presumably fleshy mass, which made the dinosaur resemble a Pachycephalosaurus. The dinosaur's snout was also less angular and was shorter. This design was changed at some point during production.
Early builds of Turok had the game's titanic T. rex encountering and brutally killing a Dilophosaurus. Animation reels by Cameron Fielding would go a step further, showing the T. rex feeding on the Dilophosaurus. The former would be seen in some of the game's first screenshots, although the encounter would wind up being cut from the retail release of the game as it was scaled down.
