"This heavy mini-gun unleashes a steady hail of bullets. It takes a few seconds to spin up before firing, or can be pre-spun for instantaneous response using the Turok (2008 video game) - HUD icon - L2 [or] Turok (2008 video game) - HUD icon - Left Trigger. The War Horse has a Secondary function that converts it into a ground mounted auto turret. This turret will provide covering fire and take out enemies with no input from the player."
Turok manual[1]

The ORO War Horse minigun, also referred to as the minigun or mini-gun, is a rotary cannon manufactured by ORO that was first introduced during the events of Turok. This heavy cannon acts as the signature weapon of both Jericho and Mendel-Gruman Heavy Weapons units.

Appearance[]

The War Horse is a gunmetal gray and black weapon, sporting a six-barreled assembly. Featuring two sets of handles, the War Horse is able to be held like a conventional minigun; it also features a unique forearm that acts like a conventional rifle's, allowing a user to wield the weapon as such. This weapon is belt-fed, utilizing a large magazine that is attached to the right side of its chassis.

Gameplay[]

Single-player[]

This weapon is found later on in Turok. The War Horse takes the role of the Minigun, with a high fire rate, a wide cone of damage, and high damage per round. It suffers from a low average range, an issue that becomes exacerbated as the player moves and their reticle expands; while also slowing the player's base movement speed. Like the L66 pulse rifle, the mechanics of the War Horse allow it to entire almost indefinitely within any major engagement, only requiring a reload after an enormous amount of ammunition is spent.

Unlike all other weaponry, the minigun features no iron sights or aim down sights mechanic, instead, the zoom button being held allows the player to pre-spin the weapon's barrels, allowing them to immediately fire on any threat they find.

Multiplayer[]

The minigun is a massive threat within Turok's multiplayer component, being able to dish out massive damage. Its greatest utility lies in its secondary function, which can allow players to utilize the War Horse's damage and range, while effectively being in two places at once. Getting hit by this weapon will greatly reduce the player's speed in both single and multiplayer, while also resulting in high damage taken, making even peeking against this weapon a giant risk.

Secondary function[]

The War Horse's secondary function shifts its role to that of a ground-mounted autonomous sentry; allowing the player to perform other actions and focus on other areas while the War Horse targets and fires at enemy units and dinosaurs on its own. This function also provides the weapon an added accuracy and range bonus, increasing its overall effectiveness in combat. It will however, run out of ammunition at some point, requiring the player to collect and reload it before they can place it again. If the weapon is unable to be placed due to terrain issues, the player will be met with Turok (2008 video game) - HUD icon - ORO War Horse (error), forcing them to try again in a different location.

Pickups[]

  • ORO War Horse minigun: Restores 500 minigun rounds.
  • Minigun Ammo: Restores 300 minigun rounds.

History[]

Shortly after Joseph Turok's return to Whiskey Company's crash site, an attack by the Mendel-Gruman Corporation occurred. Two Mendel-Gruman Heavy Weapons soldiers were eventually dropped into the fray, and quickly turned their War Horses on Parker, killing him immediately as Turok watched helplessly. Jericho would utilize the weapon during the conflict on the planet, and would carry it up until the time of his death.

Production notes[]

During Turok's development, this weapon was originally dubbed the ORO Warhorse Chaingun, a name much of Turok's accompanying media still uses[2]. Despite the name, this weapon is actually a rotary cannon, which are defined by their rotating barrel assemblies, high fire rates, and the lack of a chain driven feed mechanism, all of which may have played a role in its redesignation. The War Horse also seems to derive both its design and finalized name from the M134 Minigun, a rotary cannon in use by many modern armies all over the world.

Much of Turok's early promotional media depicts Slade utilizing the War Horse in a major capacity. This would even be shown in the Turok demo's splash screen. Ultimately, Slade would never use the weapon once in-game, with it being given to Jericho and heavier enemy types.
