The Quetzalcoatlus[1] is a pterosaur that made its first appearance during the events of Turok: Evolution.
Appearance[]
The Quetzalcoatlus of Evolution was a large animal, looking much akin to its Pteranodon cousin with two enormous wings and a large beak. The Quetzalcoatlus of Turok: Evolution features a strange beak, featuring a distinct red coloration with two protuberances, one above and one below. Its skin coloration is deeper purple, which becomes redder around the trailing edges of the wing.
Gameplay[]
The player mounts the Quetzalcoatlus during five of Turok: Evolution's fifteen chapters in what is referred to as "flight mode." During flight mode, the player has access to the two weapons mounted on the pterosaur's harness: the .50 cal cannon and the rocket pods.
The .50 cal cannon is a simple machine gun that fires at a steady rate and never runs out of ammunition. This weapon can also be augmented by the Overdrive pickup, doubling its rate of fire and damage output. The rocket pods are missiles that have homing capabilities, and the player can hold up to twenty of them at a time.
The Quetzalcoatlus handles very simply during flight mode: it flies forward at all times and can be turned on both the x- and y-axes. Left and right turns can be turned into something resembling a roll by pressing the dedicated roll left/right buttons/keys. The Quetzalcoatlus has the same amount of health as the player does on foot, and it can be killed nearly instantaneously by unfortunate collisions with level geometry.
History[]
Following a few basic trials in the jungles of Jungalus Vulgarimicus, Tal'Set met Genn who proceeded to get him acquainted with his new Quetzalcoatlus.[2] The two would take to the skies, engaging Sleg forces within the area, including a massive camp on the side of a river, a mine field, and an abandoned series of temples that hosted a colossal Sleg airship.[3] Tal'Set would subsequently fly his Quetzalcoatlus to Tarkeen's abode, and after talking to him, would presumably use it to fly to Valiskus Maxima.
Caged Quetzalcoatlus were found by Tal'Set as he entered the Sleg base to rescue some of his allies.[4] Tal'Set's Quetzalcoatlus would save him following his near-fatal fall from an ancient bridge in the Dark Jungle, with Genn rejoining him in an assault on the Sleg in the deserts of the Lost Land. They would eventally come across a Sleg fortress in the area and succeed in destroying it.[5] Upon arriving at the Suspended City, this Quetzalcoatlus would die crash landing outside the city's gates.[6]
Following the release of the city's tethers Tal'Set would gain another Quetzalcoatlus, joining Genn once more in escaping the doomed city. Before they left, they'd sabotage the Sleg's escape options, dooming many of them to the city's collapse.[7] Tal'Set would then fly his Quetzalcoatlus over the arid desert, trailing the enormous Juggernaut. Upon locating it, he'd land on the base built on the animal's back.[8]
The subsequent destruction of the Juggernaut would see Tal'Set once more taking to the skies; the Quetzalcoatlus played a pivotal role in defending Galyanna from Brachiosaurus and seaborne artillery, on top of Sleg establishments along the city's beachside.[9] Tal'Set would then fly the animal to a nearby canyon, intent on finishing Tobias Bruckner.
Production notes[]
Errors[]
Despite both the game's manual and its strategy guide[10] identifying the creature as a Quetzalcoatlus, Turok: Evolution's multiplayer refers to it as a Pteranodon, which can also be found in the game.
