Plot summary[]

Chapter One: Currents[]

In a quiet but peaceful corner of the Lost Land, two soon-to-be-married inhabitants spend a moment enjoying each other's company. Unfortunately, their peace does not last. A vortex opens above them, ripping them from the world they know and depositing them in one where they will be slowly eaten and nested in by millions of microscopic roaches.

These events do not go unnoticed, however. Adon, in the city of Forever Light, watches numerous vortices tear apart their reality bit by bit. The Council of Voices tasks her to deal with these problems. However, the Council has grown concerned that Adon has doubts about her duty, blaming her earlier dealings with the Turok Joshua Fireseed. She cannot hide her thoughts from the Council, as they are telepathically linked, and admits that she years for a different life, but she reiterates her commitment.

On Earth, a ship appears out of nowhere and smashes into a skyscraper. Joshua and Barry Hackowitcz watch the story on the news, the former recognizing it as a ship from Galyanna. Joshua gets up and says he has to deal with it as the Turok, dismissing Barry's concerns that he is using it as a distraction from Nancy Carter.

Back in the Lost Land, above the city of Orbonn, a portal opens and begins to sucking up the inhabitants. Adon appears and rescues a child. While she helps the other citizens, Joshua arrives on the scene to help. Adon is pleased to see him and is even happier that he does not hold any ill-will towards her from their previous conflicts of interest. Joshua is equally pleased to see Adon, but the Council of Voices take that moment to assert control of Adon's body, announcing that the citizens of Orbonn should begin to evacuate their city. Joshua tells the Council to leave as their announcement is over, but Adon tells him that it is part of her duty as Speaker of Forever Light. The pair move on together, looking to deal with the source of the vortices.

The Council is frustrated by the appearance of the Turok, but realize that it must be because his world is affected by the vortices as well. However, they grow wary that they will not be able to enact their contingency plan if he is involved. They are confident Adon will act as their agent, despite her feelings for Joshua, as it is her duty. There is still concern about the source of the vortices, especially if the source is what they believe it to be. Regardless, they are assembling equipment that will ensure that they are prepared no matter what.

Chapter Two: Connections[]

Adon and Joshua travel through the jungle, following the vortices' electron disbursement towards their source. Adon feels strange having someone with her while she performs her duties, but she enjoys the particular strangeness of Joshua and does not want it to end. She probes Joshua with personal questions, longing to know more about him. Despite Joshua telling her of regular Earth things, she wishes she could give up her duties for a normal life, but says this is not possible. Adon cannot even ask her mother for advice, as she allowed her corporeal form to be disassembled and now only exists as an interactive history program in the Grand Design.

Joshua cannot understand why Adon's mother allowed herself to die but can still hear the sadness in Adon's voice. She explains that her mother lived for hundreds of years and that a Speaker's life is difficult. Adon likes the fact that Joshua feels sadness for her, as no one ever feels anything for her. Adon goes on to reiterate that it is the responsibility of her lineage and that a Turok should understand that. Joshua says that he does, but that sometimes "responsibility isn't [his] thing." Adon realizes that Joshua is the closest thing she has to a friend and that the Council will be aware of this thought.

The pair reach the point of origin of the electron trail, a building in ruins. Adon continues to question Joshua, this time about his romances. Joshua asks her if she has ever been involved with anyone, fully aware that he is stumbling over his own answers around her. Adon wishes that she could, but she stops mid-sentence when she spots a partially active data bank. The ruins are, in fact, the remains of a laboratory complex, one that worked to maintain the cohesion of Galyanna's reality by using the vortices. The two suppose that some miscalculations had been made.

Before they go their separate ways, Joshua repeats his question: has Adon ever been with anyone before? Adon reiterates that she has not and that the kind of connection Joshua speaks of is out of the question for a Speaker. During their conversation, they creep steadily closer to each other. Just as they kiss, however, a vortex opens just overhead. Realizing that the vortices' power is increasing exponentially, Adon says that she must go to the Grand Design and download their discovery into it. Joshua is left to run from the portal.

Chapter Three: Override[]

Adon downloads their discovered information into the main computer, crosschecking it against what is already stored. Whilst researching the information, she realizes that the Council had already been aware of what vortices could do. She confronts them and accuses them of planning to reverse the portals' energy fields, which would do untold damage to other worlds.

The Council says that they plan to try to minimize the damage, but their main concern is the Lost Land's protection, telling Adon that it should be her main concern as well. They dismiss her, but she cannot bear the thought of so much damage coming to so many people. She leaves to warn Turok; however, the Council has planned for this, too.

Adon reaches Joshua and warns him of the Council's designs. Joshua prepares for an all assault, but the Council commandeers Adon's body and takes a shot at him. Knowing that he would kill her if he used his strongest weaponry, he readies a nega-sphere to dampen her bio-electric field enough to stop her. Adon shoots it out of his hand before he can throw it. Adon begins glowing, emitting electromagnetic waves in order to microwave Joshua's organs. He pulls out one last weapon and fires. He misses, but it is close enough to cause the Council to cease the attack and defend themselves. The Council finally moves in for the kill, but Adon is able to break through and regain full control.

The Council concedes the battle and explains that the fabric of the Lost Land's reality had been weakened by the death of the Primagen. They believe that their plan is the only way. Adon suggests redirecting the energy from the vortices and using it to fortify the dimensional barriers. The Council dismisses the idea, saying that they would need both a conduit and a powerful sentience to constantly monitor the energy flow, to which Adon recommends herself as the former and the Council as the latter. The Council is outraged at the idea of being eternally trapped in such a stasis, but Adon reminds them that protecting the Lost Land is both her duty and theirs.

Losing Adon devastates Joshua, but she lets him know that she will always be thinking of him, no matter how many millennia pass. Adon accepts her fate, knowing it is the only way to save the Lost Land, as she and the Council rise into the air to begin their eternal administration.

Some time later, Joshua returns to Earth, gets into bed, and covers his face, all the while Barry remains blissfully ignorant of his heartbreak.
